Staying safe with Spin Back Cycles
The vast majority of transactions on Spin Back Cycles are completely straightforward. Cyclists are, by and large, good people — and most deals are agreed quickly, completed face to face, and leave both parties happy. This guide gives you the practical knowledge to keep it that way, at every stage of the process.
Before you meet
Use the Spin Back Cycles messaging system for all communication until you are confident the transaction is genuine. This keeps a record of all contact and protects both parties.
-
Ask for additional photos if you want to see specific details — the drivetrain, any wear, the frame number. A genuine seller will always be happy to provide them.
-
Ask for the bike’s frame number and check it against a free stolen bike registry. We recommend Bike Index (bikeindex.org), which covers Luxembourg and the surrounding region. If the frame number has been removed or tampered with, do not proceed with the transaction.
-
Be cautious of listings with very few photos, vague descriptions, or prices that seem too good to be true. These are the most common indicators of a fraudulent listing.
-
Never pay in advance for a bike you have not seen in person. No legitimate seller in a local marketplace transaction will ask for payment before a viewing.
Meeting in Person
Always meet in a busy, public location. Good options in Luxembourg include: the car park of a major supermarket (Auchan Kirchberg, Cactus, Lidl), the Place d’Armes or Place Guillaume II in Luxembourg City, the station forecourt, or a busy cycling hub or sports facility.
-
Tell someone where you are going and who you are meeting. Share the listing link with them.
-
It is completely fine to bring a friend or family member with you. A genuine seller will have no objection.
-
If the seller or buyer suggests meeting at a private address you do not know, propose a public alternative. If they insist, decline the transaction. Your safety is more important than any bike.
-
Trust your instincts. If something about the meeting feels wrong when you arrive, leave.
Inspecting before buying
Check the frame carefully for cracks, dents, buckles, or signs of repair to the main tubes. Pay particular attention to the welds at the junctions of the top tube, down tube, and seat tube.
-
Check the frame number. It is usually stamped on the bottom bracket shell (the part where the crank arms attach). If it is missing, filed off, or clearly tampered with, the bike may be stolen. Walk away.
-
Spin the wheels and check that they are true (no wobble). Look for cracks in the rim. Check the tyres for wear, cuts, and sidewall damage.
-
Test the brakes before a test ride. Squeeze the levers and make sure the bike stops firmly. Worn brake pads or bent rotors are inexpensive to fix but worth flagging to negotiate the price.
-
Shift through all the gears on the test ride. Hesitation, skipping, or grinding are signs the drivetrain needs attention.
-
Ask for a test ride. Any genuine seller will expect it and will be happy to let you ride the bike. If a seller refuses to allow a test ride, be very cautious about proceeding.
-
For e-bikes: check that the battery charges and holds charge, that the motor assistance works across all assist levels, and that the display and controls function normally. Ask about the number of charge cycles if known.
Payment and Handover
Cash is the simplest and most common payment method for in-person transactions in Luxembourg. Count it together at the point of handover.
-
If transferring money electronically, use a trusted service (Payconiq, Virement SEPA, or similar) and confirm receipt before the bike leaves your hands.
-
Never wire money internationally for a local listing. Legitimate local sellers do not require international transfers.
-
If something feels wrong at any point during the transaction — the price changes, the seller becomes evasive, the bike doesn’t match the listing — it is always better to walk away. A genuine seller will understand.
After you buy & Protection
Photograph your bike from multiple angles and record the frame number immediately after purchase. Store these somewhere accessible.
-
Register your bike with the Luxembourg Police via their My Safe service (mysafe.lu). Registration is free and creates an official record of ownership that helps police identify and return stolen bikes.
-
Invest in a quality lock — a sold-secure gold-rated D-lock paired with a secondary cable lock is the recommended minimum for overnight parking in Luxembourg.
-
Never leave your bike locked in a public place overnight if you can avoid it.
